Here offered are original mixed media artworks by me, Mary Ann Wakeley. They are created on wood, paper or canvas in various sizes. I also make smaller three dimensional works in clay or found objects that are more in line with sculpture and assemblage. I seem to have a harder time parting with these pieces but I am working on that.
I love color and line and enjoy playing with shapes in whatever way resonates with me. My work is feeling and intuitively based. "Style" is not a consideration for me. Even though there is diversity in how I work, there is still a constant thread running through it all. Influences contributing to the work are music, nature, a mood, a season. Often just flipping through an interiors or fashion magazine will stimulate the creative juices. It truly is an abstract process. Painting makes me happy and keeps me in touch with my self. I find I gravitate to certain colors, blue being one of them. Recently I chose the name Blue Light Studio to reflect this.
Although there was a brief period of taking life drawing classes along with concepts in design--I am referring to a total of four continuing education evening classes in the late eighties, early nineties--I explored painting--both abstract and the figures--using a variety of mediums, on my own. Learning by doing is something I have found very valuable as an artist. It keeps the process fresh and individual while still being part of the whole. I feel that each of us has a unique voice that we can remain true to.
Pricing is something I constantly evaluate. I endeavor to keep my pricing reasonable, believing that art can be accessible to all who enjoy it. The internet has made it possible for people from all economic backgrounds to participate in owning a piece of art that speaks to them. For this I am very grateful.
I have many paintings from 2012 to present that I will offer at a lesser price here to help clear out the studio. Some of those may be reworked to bring them to a more current feel, but still I would love to see many of those pieces remain as they were when they were created and hope they will find a home where they can be enjoyed. I rarely rework older paintings. They represent a slice of my personality and the spirit of the time when they were made.
